What is a medical register and what is it for?

A medical register is a database where data, referring to a particular pathology, is stored.

In the field of medicine it is necessary to register clinical activity; there are also numerous international literary references that recommend the use of medical registers in order to evaluate the clinical attendance and its quality

Furthermore, an extensive and well designed database is a source of inexhaustible information that generates much scientific production, like conference papers, posters, scientific articles, doctoral thesis, public or private grants, obtaining patents, all kinds of scientific presentations, research awards and a host of etcetera.

The results gauged from a medical register could guide political response over health issues, improve the internal organization of a service so as to make it more efficient and even influence the way in which new hospitals are built.

In order to check the practical uses of maintaining a medical register, we will use a specific example. In the following chart we analyze the delay in administering medication which had to be given as soon as possible to the selected patients.example1

We start off with an initial record of 3 hours in 1994 then end up at 2 hours in 2013. Therefore, the total delay time has been reduced by 1 hour, which means that there has been a reduction of a third. To obtain this final result, a series of procedures have occurred over the analyzed years that have succeeded in saving many lives:

  1. In just one year, merely by keeping a register, the delay was reduced by 20 minutes.
  2. The point numbered as 3 on the chart shows how there was a reduction of 30 minutes, compared to the starting point, by using the medication in the ER instead of administering it in the ICU (Intensive Care Unit); also, improvements were made in the urgent access to ICU thanks to the implementation of rapid response protocols within the hospital.
  3. From 2009 to 2012 the delay was reduced by 45 minutes when the administration of the medication was consolidated with pre-hospital health systems such as 061/112 (Emergency Callout Numbers).
  4. In 2013 the highest reduction was obtained against the starting point, i.e. 60 minutes, once the supply of the medication was extended to a larger number of pre-hospital centers.
